Tarchetti and pity

Iginio Ugo Tarchetti explores a love that in actually may not be a true love in his novel Passion. Tarchetti sets the scene as Giorgio, a military officer, is visiting a city where he comes across a women named Clara. He feels as though this is the women to solve his problems. He exclaims, “I could thrive again, and smile once more at life! But youth belongs to the young, joy to the happy!” (15). With these new emotions inside of him he feels as though he must have Clara and will do what he has to in order for them to fall in love. He tries his hardest to make Clara love him, he writes a letter saying, “I am unhappy, I am sick, I suffer” (17). It is messages like this to Clara that spurs a relationship. She would come to him and embrace him, which led him to believe they were in love. But, he says, “It was indeed her pity that led her to love” (19). With this statement one must realize that love does not come from pity. Love can never come from pity, as it is never truly love. Love can not be drawn from pity because as it is stated, “You must have compassion…loving, generous, sincere compassion” (55). None of these elements can be found in pity at all, pity resembles  a sorrow for one another.

  1. I disagree Tom, it is quite evident that Giorgio recognizes immediately Clara has pity for his torment and rather than try and make her love him, he is pushing her to act on her emotions and be with him. Their love was predetermined when they first met.

I do like your point that pity is never a solid foundation to love, but as shown through Clara and Giorgio's relationship, it can be the catalyst of something much more meaningful and of much greater depth.

  2. I agree that Giorgio and Cara's love is not real because it stemmed from pity. Cara originally sought to be close to Giorgio because she saw him in a state of sorrow; his unhappiness brought them close together. When she then committed the act of adultery, it was because she was sad from a loveless marriage. Neither truly loves each other because they did not take the time to understand each other, they are just equals in that they are both unhappy. They mistake their unhappiness as love for each other.
